Named after Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the course of Punnamda Lake on the second Saturday of August every year. This fiercely fought boat race is often considered as the ultimate test of skill, speed and endurance and attracts thousands of people. Prior to competing for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, rowers numbering about 90 to 100 on each low slung chundan vellam (snake boat) undergo rigorous training for many days.
